Moving cabinets and armoires – the quick and easy way

Armoires and cabinets are indeed attention catchers, the beauty of this decorative furniture can suddenly be diminished especially as moving day draws near. It’s the type of cumbersome furniture that one would rather leave behind if it were not for their effective storage qualities. Plus relocating with this type of furniture can be a great challenge. Here are a few ways in which you can easily move armoires and cabinets without the fuss and stress.

One of the first things that you should do is to remove the items that are packed into the armoire and cabinet and place then in boxes for moving. If they are fragile items such as porcelain ornaments and the like, be sure to bubble wrap them a few times before gently placing in them in the box. When it comes to your cabinet, it would be wise to remove the shelves (if they are indeed removable) and put them aside. These shelves should be placed in another part of the truck for moving since you do not want it to slide out and damage other items in the vehicle. You should also think about removing the doors of the cabinets as well; a rough drive can make it catapult to God knows where in the back of the truck.

There are some who may have armoires and even cabinets that have glass doors; these can be very tricky to move. When you get to this part you can either call on professional movers to assist you if you think you would make a mess of it or simply use a moving blanket over the area as it is made for protecting fragile items such as these.

We also recommend that you also remove the drawers in the cabinet or armoire rather than taping it to stay sturdy. By taking it you would be giving yourself an extra headache as most of the times the tape would is hard to remove and would ultimately destroy your furniture.

Another option for holding the drawers and doors in place is to get it shrink wrapped. Shrink wrapping an item such as this is a tedious job, but it’s worth it especially when you are trying to protect items such as these.

If you want to remove the doors and drawers instead one of the first things to do is to remove the screws and set them aside in a Ziploc bag and label so that you can locate them easily when you move. Once that is completed and set aside, then it times to remove the drawers and doors those of which you should also wrap in moving blankets.

Inventory List

If you talk to a moving expert and ask them about one of the more essential parts of the moving process, they would immediately tell you that keeping a list of inventory is a good thing. This list is essential in that it would allow you to see exactly what you have in your household so that should something go missing, you have your list to show to the movers. A list is also important to track damaged items as well should the unfortunate happen.

Making an inventory list is easy; you simply go to each room in your house and itemize every item that you own there. It would be best to actually list them by room example Matt’s bedroom or upstairs bathroom etc.

In addition, keep inventory of all the valuable items that you may have in your home as well as a list of all the electronics too. Separating each category would help you keep a better tracking system for which you can quickly scan and immediately address, while the movers are still there.

You should also try to pack your items according to how they are written down and grouped on your list; you should also label your boxes accordingly as well.

Thanks to the power of technology, keeping moving inventory has also become much easier.  By using your digital camera, you can take pictures of your items or put the camera in video mode where you can not only see pictures but also vocally record each item. If you are using the still picture function, detailing is very important to capture on film. For instance if you have brand new items you should zoom in to show how impeccable the items are before moving day. That way should they get damaged the movers would never get the chance to say that they picked up the items from your home in that condition. When you start talking your still pictures, also ensure that the date and time is set on the camera. Videotaping inventory is quick and easy than still pictures; you can also use the zoom feature to identify special detailing on your items. Remember that even if you are using the above form of technology for inventory, you could never go wrong with having a backup paper list. If you can’t get both the list and videos done, ask a family member to assist you.

Unpacking the quick and sensible way

For anyone who has just moved into a new home, there is the very familiar scene of unpacked boxes lying around the room. Most of the procrastination on this part of the moving project comes from not knowing exactly where to begin with the unpacking process.

For an unpacking project to go well, you should devise a plan and stick to it. If you usually get a day off from work during the week, then this would be the ideal time to start unpacking. Weekend is also a great time to unpack; you have the support of your family plus their extra hands to get things moving. We always advise that you set your unpacking project to your favorite music along with some snacks and drinks. You would be surprised how quickly and easily you would get it all done.

The trick of all this is to also start unpacking from room to room. Remember that list of household items that you made. For instance most people prefer to start packing the kitchen so that they can prepare food for the family instead of spending money to eat out. Pack up your dishes, pots pans and even stock the refrigerator with fresh grocery items and the basic foods. If you have not plugged in your microwave, coffee maker or even toaster oven then this would be a good time to do so.

After the kitchen, the next place that should be given priority is the bedrooms. Sure you have been practically sleeping on the floor in camp-out fashion; now it is important to get a good nice rest on a comfortable bed. With that said this would be a good time to get out your tool kit and start assembling your beds. Remember you did not have to disassemble your dresser so that is one problem that is out of the way. After the beds are made, the drapes should go up followed by adding your personal touch to the room with your furniture.

You may have had your bathroom halfway completed by hanging the shower curtains, toilet tissue, toothbrush and even put out a towel or two for immediate use You should now unpack the items that would go into the medicine cabinet as well as to place the mouthwash and other essentials in its right place in the bathroom. Take your towels and store them in one of your spare cupboards perhaps the one in the hallway or close to the bathroom. And if you have extra bathroom items such as toilet tissue, toothpaste and bath soap etc, you should also store them in the hallway cupboard or where you can get easy access to it.

Finally, you should start unpacking your living room which is the biggest task that you may encounter in your move. That’s because you would be spending most of your time wiring and decorating in order to make the living area as comfortable enough for yourself and those who may stop over.

New Year Moving Guide

What is the perfect way to ring in the New Year? By moving into a new home where you can get a fresh start on life. If you have intentions of moving in the first month of the New Year, it is best that you start planning now so as to avoid any interruptions along the way. Remember that moving is indeed a big project so it there are a lot of details you must pay attention to as you plan to relocate.

One of the first things that you would do is to locate a moving company. After you have chosen the company that fits your needs you should provide the company and its movers with all your contact numbers so that they are always able to contact you no matter where you are. Moving house can be very unpredictable; there are times when the company may be running late etc because of reasons beyond their control. This is the time that they would want to reach out to you.

Packing your items would be next on the agenda and this is the task that you should always try to do with great precision as you never want to leave anything behind. Experts would tell you that it is better to pack room by room. We also want to add that it would also be wise to package a special box that would contain all your immediate necessities that you would need when you move to your new home. By packing a box of necessities you would definitely be saving yourself the extra time you would spend fishing out something like let’s say your toothbrush, toilet paper or even light bulbs.

As you pack, remember that the movers are prohibited from taking certain items on the truck for moving. This would include everything from cleaning agents to flammables, ammunition and even aerosol cans. In addition, if you are moving machinery from your home such as lawnmower, you would need to empty out the fuel before the mower is loaded on the moving truck.

Proper attention and care must also be given to moving your favorite china and mirrors which are undoubtedly two fragile items. There are dish containers that are available for wrapping items such as your beloved china. However, if you do not have such an item then your best bet would be to place the china in newsprint (preferably white) which should then be inserted into a durable type barrel. You could save yourself some chinaware damage if you were to pack the heavier piece of china at the bottom of the barrel and then pack the lighter ones on top of it. Similarly, when it comes to moving mirrors or even pictures, make sure that you have them well padded and wrapped and placed in a suitable storage.

Finally, you may have some valuable documents or items laying around the home for moving. Your best bet would be to package them and keep them with you in your vehicle for moving. These items usually include jewelry, alcoholic beverages and even important documents. Therefore you should never entrust it to the movers since most of them are not responsible for repaying or replacing your items.

Money saving tips

The words “moving” and “saving money” are not usually used in the same sentence especially since moving is a huge financial undertaking no matter how near or far away you move.  And while you may be a bit nervous about how much money you need to put aside to make your home relocation happen, there are actually some ways in which you can scale down your moving finances so that you would have a little cash left over after you are all moved in.

You can start saving money right away if you were to self-move which would allow you and your friends to do everything from packing, to loading and eventually driving the moving vehicle en route to your new home. With a self-move, the only money you would be spending out is for the rental of the truck which is way cheaper than if you go with a full-service moving company.

Next, if you have control over the months when you can move out, you should choose those months that are considered the slow period in the moving business. Stay clear of the summer months as they are not only the busiest but also the most expensive months to move.

You can also spend less money moving if you were to pack your own boxes instead of leaving it up to the movers who would charge an additional fee to get the job done. When it comes to packing, you should seek out boxes from your neighborhood grocery store or from friends and family which would save you from purchasing new boxes. Also, if you have items in your home that you really do not need then you can decide if you want to sell them all or donate it to a charitable organization. Either way you would be clearing out the clutter from your home and ultimately cutting down on the load in the moving van.  Keep in mind that some moving companies bill you by the weight of the items that you are moving; get rid of as much unwanted items as you can.

Always keep your receipts from the move since when tax period rolls around; you can claim it as a tax-deductable expenses. Visit the Internal Revenue Service’s (IRS) website to find out more information about that.  Finally when you get to the new place,  you should also have some friends there who can help you unpack your items so that the movers would not have to do the job for an extra cost.
