How to budget your moving expenses

Moving house while trying to save some money may seem like an oxymoron; let’s not kid ourselves, moving can be an expensive undertaking whether you are purchasing or renting a property. Purchasing a home can set you back quite a bit especially when legal and closing fees are involved. Renting a house or apartment is not cheap either; most landlords require that you make a two month security deposit before moving in as well as you may also be required to pay for your own background check.

Just thinking about how much money one has to spend on moving is enough to make you want to stay put and make the best of where you currently stay. But it really does not have to be that way especially if you get down to some good old budgeting.  With the economy forcing most to tighten the grip on their wallets, this is one good way that you can see your money and know exactly how to spend it.

If you are not in a hurry to move from where you currently stay but have intentions of moving someday, it would be wise for you to start a savings account specifically for moving. For those purchasing a house, while the cost of your house may be covered by the mortgage banks, remember that you also have to save for other things that you would need for the house. These essentials may include the cost of paint; you may also need to pay for lawn care as well, not to mention you have to save money for the movers or may even need to install a security device. You can start as soon as possible to save towards the above mentioned essentials.

For those hoping to rent you should be saving for your rental deposits, money to pay the movers plus have a little left over for emergencies.

Now here is where the budgeting comes in. With the money that you decided to save each month, you can now go forward with hunting for your new home. For renters, if you have managed to save at least $7,000, you should be looking for a rent that is ten percent of what you save especially if you want to be able to pay your bills and have surplus. Looking for an affordable rent does not mean that you have to compromise your taste and safety; if you have to spend another hundred dollars or two to get the kind of home that you want and in your desired neighborhood, then by all means you should do just that.

You may also want to get quotes from those involved in the move including the movers, or the rental truck for self move, as well as the rental deposits for the homes you may be interested in. Once you gather this information, you can use these quotes against what you have saved to determine if you would have enough left over to go forward with your move or if you would have to continue saving some more.

Reputable moving companies

Good moving companies are indeed hard to find; the same goes for packing companies as well. It seems like they all advertise how great their companies are, some even brag about their effective service. Unless you know someone who has personally been one of their customers, you just can’t settle for idle boast. The good thing is that there are indeed reputable moving companies out there and we have the skinny on what it would take for you to find them.

What sets a reputable company apart from the newcomers and scammers is the way that they do business and how they treat customers. For instance you would know that you are dealing with a company that is above board when they give you a copy of the booklet called “Your Rights and Responsibilities when you Move”.  This booklet has just about everything that you need to know about moving in terms of rules and regulations and it is the type of publication that some moving companies would not want you to see.

A good moving company would also work closely with you and is patient enough to explain everything to you before you sign on the dotted line. Most movers do this in the form of a checklist to determine how much items you have in your home; they may even be able to give you an estimate quote at no cost to you. And speaking of quotes, moving companies that are being run by considerate people would provide you with the different types of quotes so that you can easily make the right one that is suitable for you.

You should choose and stay with a moving company that tells you upfront about the cost of moving plus additional services that you may need. Too often shady and unprofessional movers neglect to tell customers about all the fees upfront so that by the time they are ready to get moved in to their new home, the rats suddenly increase. This evidently forces the customer to pay extra money for the release of their household goods.

A good moving company representative is one who would answer all your questions about all the aspects of your move. Don’t leave the mover’s office until they can show you a copy of the company’s insurance and proof of license as well. Any company that would shy away from giving you these two pertinent information, then you should move on to the next moving company on your list.

Inventory List

If you talk to a moving expert and ask them about one of the more essential parts of the moving process, they would immediately tell you that keeping a list of inventory is a good thing. This list is essential in that it would allow you to see exactly what you have in your household so that should something go missing, you have your list to show to the movers. A list is also important to track damaged items as well should the unfortunate happen.

Making an inventory list is easy; you simply go to each room in your house and itemize every item that you own there. It would be best to actually list them by room example Matt’s bedroom or upstairs bathroom etc.

In addition, keep inventory of all the valuable items that you may have in your home as well as a list of all the electronics too. Separating each category would help you keep a better tracking system for which you can quickly scan and immediately address, while the movers are still there.

You should also try to pack your items according to how they are written down and grouped on your list; you should also label your boxes accordingly as well.

Thanks to the power of technology, keeping moving inventory has also become much easier.  By using your digital camera, you can take pictures of your items or put the camera in video mode where you can not only see pictures but also vocally record each item. If you are using the still picture function, detailing is very important to capture on film. For instance if you have brand new items you should zoom in to show how impeccable the items are before moving day. That way should they get damaged the movers would never get the chance to say that they picked up the items from your home in that condition. When you start talking your still pictures, also ensure that the date and time is set on the camera. Videotaping inventory is quick and easy than still pictures; you can also use the zoom feature to identify special detailing on your items. Remember that even if you are using the above form of technology for inventory, you could never go wrong with having a backup paper list. If you can’t get both the list and videos done, ask a family member to assist you.

New Year Moving Guide

What is the perfect way to ring in the New Year? By moving into a new home where you can get a fresh start on life. If you have intentions of moving in the first month of the New Year, it is best that you start planning now so as to avoid any interruptions along the way. Remember that moving is indeed a big project so it there are a lot of details you must pay attention to as you plan to relocate.

One of the first things that you would do is to locate a moving company. After you have chosen the company that fits your needs you should provide the company and its movers with all your contact numbers so that they are always able to contact you no matter where you are. Moving house can be very unpredictable; there are times when the company may be running late etc because of reasons beyond their control. This is the time that they would want to reach out to you.

Packing your items would be next on the agenda and this is the task that you should always try to do with great precision as you never want to leave anything behind. Experts would tell you that it is better to pack room by room. We also want to add that it would also be wise to package a special box that would contain all your immediate necessities that you would need when you move to your new home. By packing a box of necessities you would definitely be saving yourself the extra time you would spend fishing out something like let’s say your toothbrush, toilet paper or even light bulbs.

As you pack, remember that the movers are prohibited from taking certain items on the truck for moving. This would include everything from cleaning agents to flammables, ammunition and even aerosol cans. In addition, if you are moving machinery from your home such as lawnmower, you would need to empty out the fuel before the mower is loaded on the moving truck.

Proper attention and care must also be given to moving your favorite china and mirrors which are undoubtedly two fragile items. There are dish containers that are available for wrapping items such as your beloved china. However, if you do not have such an item then your best bet would be to place the china in newsprint (preferably white) which should then be inserted into a durable type barrel. You could save yourself some chinaware damage if you were to pack the heavier piece of china at the bottom of the barrel and then pack the lighter ones on top of it. Similarly, when it comes to moving mirrors or even pictures, make sure that you have them well padded and wrapped and placed in a suitable storage.

Finally, you may have some valuable documents or items laying around the home for moving. Your best bet would be to package them and keep them with you in your vehicle for moving. These items usually include jewelry, alcoholic beverages and even important documents. Therefore you should never entrust it to the movers since most of them are not responsible for repaying or replacing your items.

How to save with your moving company

If you had the opportunity to save with your moving company during your next home relocation, would you do it? The answer would always be a resounding “yes”. Let’s not kid ourselves, these are indeed tough economic times that we are living in and everyone is trying to cut back on spending any way that they can. There are quite a few ways in which you can have extra cash left over when you hire a professional mover. One of the first things to do when searching out a moving company is to get moving quotes from some three or four other companies. You are not only doing this to compare prices but if there is one mover who may be slightly higher than the rest, he may be willing to lower his price somewhat in order to match his competitors and still keep your business.
Even if the moving company does not wish to match the price of another mover, ask about their bundle packages which would also be a good way to save. You may find a moving company that also does packing and unpacking services or perhaps they may offer storage services for your more treasured items such as artwork or even heirlooms. What the moving company can do for you is to offer you a good price by bundling up the services. Even if you do not find a moving company that would offer these extra services, they may be able to put you in touch with an affiliate company who may also offer the bundle package; all you have to do is ask.
If you have a flexible moving date, you may want to negotiate on that as well. The weekends are usually popular moving days; also popular are the beginning and ending of the month. If you can move when it isn’t so busy in the world of moving such as during the week, then suggest a week date to your movers and find out if they offer discounts on those days. Remember to also take advantage of the moving months that are also not popular like during the winter season up until April.
Finally as much as we are encouraging ways for you to cut costs with the movers, do not fall for those moving companies that are ridiculously cheaper than the rest. Usually these are scam artists who are trying to make easy money. They are the ones who would compromise quality and professional service with shoddy work and bad business practices.
