Summertime moving tips

Summertime is usually the month that most people choose to move home; the fact that the kids are on break from school and the weather is mostly sunny makes this time of year a particularly popular one. But even while summer conjures up brilliant sunshine in the nation, one also must not forget the rainfall that is also likely to show up as well.

True, the rain is a welcoming change especially when there have been days of record-breaking heat. And while those who work outside would welcome the rainfall to keep them cool, rain is indeed a mover’s nightmare that could very well impede progress during moving.

A little bit of rain would never cancel a move. However, if it is a thunderstorm type of scenario, then you are better off changing the moving date. For those who are unable to put off moving day because of legal landlord issues, then be prepared to put in that extra work to protect your furniture from the elements.

For your furniture, it is best that you use some heavy duty tarp to wrap or cover as well as plastic, the latter especially when covering mattresses and sofas. Avoid the use of shrink wrap as water can still seem into it.

Moving the furniture to and from the truck in the rainy weather can also be tricky. True, the top portion is covered and protected but what about the bottom part of the furniture that may have to touch the wet or muddy ground?  Moving experts would advise that you make a walkway out of either old carpets or rugs for which you can drag the items into the house. On moving day, ensure that you make the movers’ job as easy as possible. You can do this by using lots of sheets, towels, blankets, whatever you can find to lay in the house to prevent the movers from slipping. You want to lay them out smoothly so that the movers would not trip or fall. You simply cannot ask the moving crew to remove their shoes when they enter your home. That’s why it is important to either spread material on the floor or simply have a mop handy to clean up the mess.

Summertime Move

It’s almost summertime and the moving should be cool and easy. The kids would be home from school and you would be able to get them to help you package and label some household items. Summer is usually a very popular time for people to get moving from one place to another; the weather around this time of year is sunny and great for moving. Since most choose this time of year to move, there would obviously be a very high demand for moving trucks whether you choose to move yourself or hire professionals to do it for you.

To ensure that you get to move during the summer it is best that you select and book your moving date with your moving company. Once you get that out of the way then you can start planning for the other aspects of your move. First thing you would want to do is to start getting boxes to start your packing. Packing one room at a time would definitely keep everything together as it pertains to each room so that your items would be easy to find by the time you move into the new home. When packing boxes, it is always best to reinforce the bottom of them so that they won’t burst during transit. Reinforcement can take the form of blankets or foam and even bubble wrapping. Whatever you decide to use make sure that you properly seal and label your boxes. For those boxes that contain breakable items you would want to write “FRAGILE” on the box just so the movers would know that they need to handle it with care.

When it comes to moving your furniture you should always make sure that they are padded well enough with anything from a blanket to bubble wrap. This would prevent scratches on your furniture. To further protect against scratches to your furniture you can also coat the wood with wax. If you have furniture with legs then you need to remove those legs before relocating as well as you would also need to remove the nuts and screws and place them safely in a Ziploc bag. Sofas should be stood upright on its end while the cushions should be placed in a large plastic bag so that they would not get dirty or dusty. If you are moving your dressers, move the furniture with your clothing still in tem as it would definitely eliminate having to unpack and repack when you get to the new home. Before moving, the drawers in the dresser should be well secured so that the drawer would not open up while the truck is moving.

Electronics should be placed back in its original box if you still have them around and wrap then up with either foam or bubble wrap. All the cords and cables should be wrapped and secured with twist ties. You could never go wrong with labeling the cords either as this would help you get set up at the new place very easily.

Reasons why you should move

You have a strong desire to move from your current location. Are you doing so for the right reasons? With job loss being a current trend and the economy being what it is today, you should keep in mind the old adage that says “if it isn’t broke, don’t fix it” when thinking about moving. In other words, it is best to stay where you currently live unless you are faced with the following situations and can financially afford to do otherwise.

One of the main reasons why people move is because of the lack of space. You may have welcomed a new member into the family equation and so this may turn out to be a congested situation especially if you already have three other children in the mix. With four children plus mommy and daddy, there is no way they can all feel that comfortable in a two bedroom home. Moving into a four bedroom is what you should aspire to especially if you want all the kids to have their own room and of course to have your space back with your spouse for entertaining guests or just recouping that “we time”.

Another good reason to move with kids to another city is to be able to get your children in better school than they currently attend. Since school placement is based on where you live your child may be selected to go to a school that you do not necessarily approve of or which may have a low success rating. Even before you move you should check out the schools in your new neighborhood and its success rate and standard of education that is offered.

Next on the list of reasons why a person should move is the issue of commuting to and from work. Jobs may be hard to find in your current city and you may have gotten lucky with your dream job which may be an hour away. Since no one enjoys a long commute to and from their job the best thing to do is to move closer to your new workplace. Before moving, ensure that you are over your probationary period and in permanent status at the job to avoid having to lose your job in the middle of organizing to move.
