box filled with books

There are many ways these days to save on moving and packing supplies. Moving can be very expensive, so no one wants to really waste their money, if they don’t have to, on useless packing and moving supplies. The good news is that with careful planning and creative thinking, even the average Joe can save money on moving and packing supplies.

Start to think outside the box. Actually think about the boxes. Where can you find free boxes for your move that are easy to grab? One place would be at your local liquor store. These stores if you ask them will give you their empty boxes for free.

Your friends and family may think you have a drinking problem with all the liquor boxes that you have to move, but once you explain it to them, I am sure they will understand, or you will end up in rehab for a free stay, so who cares? Another thing to think about is using your old newspapers and magazines to wrap all your dishes and your pictures, and other breakables for packing and moving.

This will ensure that they don’t break while moving, and will also keep your moving costs down. You may also decide to use all your towels and blankets to wrap your breakables in so that you can move them safely. This will move not only your breakables, but also all your towels and blankets that you have to pack to move anyway, so why not use them? To keep costs down you have to be creative and think about using the things that you have around the house that need to be moved to pack and ship your belongings.

Another thing to consider when moving to keep your costs down is asking your friends and family if they can assist you with the move. The best thing is a few friends with a truck or van. They can move you easily and safely without the added expense of renting a moving truck. You should offer them some gas money and perhaps a free meal for all their hard work. Especially if you may need their assistance in the future to move again.

When you start to pack for your moving it is important that you go through all your belongings and get rid of anything that you do not need or anything that you have not used in the last year. If you do not need it or have not used it in a year, then you most likely do not need to move it with you. Throwing away or discarding things that you do not need or have not used in a long time will also keep your moving and packing expenses down. Sometimes if you have large items to donate some non-profits may even come to your home, and pick them up for you.

This will give you a tax write off, while also saving on the cost of moving or storing these belongings. If you are moving due to a new job you should keep all your receipts that you accumulate as part of your move, because this can also be a tax write off at the end of the year. Moving can be very expensive, and anything that you can do to de-clutter your life, and organize your belongings before you move would be best. There is no stranger feeling then to move to a nice, new, clean home, and have all your old junk follow after you, from one space to another. Keeping these simple things in mind while packing to move will save you money in the long run.
