Getting to know your moving vehicles

Moving vehicles are essentially an important part of your move no matter how big or small. If you are self-moving and you are thinking about renting a moving van to do so, you may not be sure which type of van you should use. To avoid renting a van that may be too big or too small to move your items, here are a few things that you should know before visiting the van renting company.

One of the more compact moving vehicles is the Panel Van. Panel Vans are small in size which makes it a perfect vehicle for a small moves such as studio apartment or even a room. Even if you are not moving a small dwelling, it is also ideal for moving one large item at a time. For the latter though, if you have more than one large item to relocate, then be prepared to make several trips back and forth.

For those of you who are planning to self-move to another city, you would enjoy the convenience of a city van. City vans are enclosed and most have features that make city driving much easier. One of the better features of a parcel van is that it has an enclosed cargo and in some vehicles one can easily stop driving and get to the cargo area without even even having to get out of the vehicle.

Moving a six bedroom home with lots of household items inside? Then a Straight Truck may be ideal for you. Also accommodating those with medium moving needs, one can stack close to 10,000lbs of items in this vehicle. Straight trucks are usually up to 26 feet long and it also features a cargo area.

You will need a tractor-trailer for not only moving long distance but also for moving an extremely large home or office. Tractor-trailers are up to 53 feet in length and provides enough space for you to stack every item most comfortably. The most convenient part about a tractor-trailer is that the tractor portion of the vehicle can easily be detached and placed on another trailer.

Let’s say you are moving from New York to Maryland, because of road travel restrictions the moving vehicle from New York may not be able to cross over to Maryland. What would happen is that the Maryland movers can easily detach the trailer from the New York moving vehicle placing it on their vehicle so as to continue the move.

Money saving tips

The words “moving” and “saving money” are not usually used in the same sentence especially since moving is a huge financial undertaking no matter how near or far away you move.  And while you may be a bit nervous about how much money you need to put aside to make your home relocation happen, there are actually some ways in which you can scale down your moving finances so that you would have a little cash left over after you are all moved in.

You can start saving money right away if you were to self-move which would allow you and your friends to do everything from packing, to loading and eventually driving the moving vehicle en route to your new home. With a self-move, the only money you would be spending out is for the rental of the truck which is way cheaper than if you go with a full-service moving company.

Next, if you have control over the months when you can move out, you should choose those months that are considered the slow period in the moving business. Stay clear of the summer months as they are not only the busiest but also the most expensive months to move.

You can also spend less money moving if you were to pack your own boxes instead of leaving it up to the movers who would charge an additional fee to get the job done. When it comes to packing, you should seek out boxes from your neighborhood grocery store or from friends and family which would save you from purchasing new boxes. Also, if you have items in your home that you really do not need then you can decide if you want to sell them all or donate it to a charitable organization. Either way you would be clearing out the clutter from your home and ultimately cutting down on the load in the moving van.  Keep in mind that some moving companies bill you by the weight of the items that you are moving; get rid of as much unwanted items as you can.

Always keep your receipts from the move since when tax period rolls around; you can claim it as a tax-deductable expenses. Cheap moving rental trucks may be more expensive than you know

If you are planning a do-it-yourself move, then more than likely you would have to start looking into renting a moving truck to do so. Since renting a moving truck is a very important part of the moving experience selecting the right truck moving company is a process that should be done with great precision. With so many truck rental companies vying for your attention, just how do you know that you are making the right choice when making your selection?

If you are on a tight budget you may be tempted to go for a rental truck company that offers the lowest price. But don’t be fooled since there are some companies that would give you a low price with stipulations that you would only find out about long after you have paid your money for the vehicle. So while you may be charged an affordable daily rate for the vehicle, some people have had situations where the rental truck company dictated the days that they would be able to use the vehicle. Most of these days that they choose are during the week and this could be a big problem especially for those who do not have flexible work schedules. It would be in your best interest to take some time and read the fine print to see what you are getting yourself into.

Also, when selecting your rental truck find out if the price quoted includes amenities as well. Is the truck air-conditioned? Is it an automatic or gear shift vehicle? What about the brakes and steering; are they powered? These are just some of the questions that you can ask the truck rental company before making a deal.

You must also know that there are some truck rental companies that would provide you with coverage on the roads just in case you get in an accident while moving while others would even cover the cost should the vehicle experience mechanical problems or should it shut down. Road coverage is an integral part of truck rental moving so if you encounter a company that does not offer coverage then you would be better off shopping around for one that does.

Getting to know your moving companies

If this is your first time moving, perhaps from out of your parents’ home for instance, then you would soon be spending your time house hunting which would be followed by trying to get moving transportation to get there. One of the first things that you should know is that no two moving companies are the same. There are different types of moving companies that offer different types of moving services. By knowing what type of companies there are out there it would put you in a better position to choose the right one that suits your budget and your needs.

There are three known ways that you can choose to move. They include full-service moving, self service moving and through do-it-yourself moving. If you decide to use a full-service moving company then you can relax and be assured that they will do everything for you during your moving day. Full-service moving companies would not only pack and load your items onto their truck but they would also unload it and place your furniture in your new rooms as well. Full-service movers are very popular; more so because they are licensed to offer you insurance should your items get lost or damaged. Compared to other moving companies, full-service is a bit more costly than the other moving companies but you definitely get your money’s worth. More importantly when you are using a full-service moving company you are paying for the convenience offered and the professional expertise that they would add to the moving experience. Be sure to ask a lot of questions up front when you visiting a full-service moving company so that there would not be any financial surprise for you when they arrive on moving day.

Another option for moving is using the self-service moving companies. This is a very cost-effective way to move and it gives you the opportunity to be more involved in your move. You get to do your own packing and loading and unloading when you get to the new home and all that’s left for the moving company to do is to transport your items from point A to B. This moving option is also very popular with those who move since another option for you within this service would be to rent a moving pod which is a container that you can take to your home and load the items yourself in your own time and at your own pace. Once the pod is loaded, the moving company would pick it up and transport it to your new home. Finally there are do-it-yourself moving companies which would rent you a truck so that you can not only pack and load it but the mover can also drive the vehicle to their new location as well. This option although inexpensive it can cost you a lot of money in the long run if some moving mistakes are made.

Since you are doing everything for yourself you may not have a direction as to what to pack and in what types of boxes. You may not know the road rules that apply to driving a moving truck either. Most of all if your items get damaged along the way due to packing your items in poorly structured boxes among other things, then you would have to get the items replaced since it is your fault and not that of the moving company. Ask a lot of questions from the moving company and confirm that they are licensed and legitimate to run such a business as well.

What you need to know about renting a moving truck

These days a person would do just about anything to cut cost in this tough economy. Even when it comes to moving your home, you may either want to lock in on the lowest prices to do so or you may opt to get the job done yourself. One of the ways in which you can cut back on moving costs is by renting and then driving the moving truck to your new destination.

No matter how much of a seasoned driver you are with your own vehicle, you could really never anticipate what it is like to drive a moving truck. The minute you find out that you would be moving, you should get your call in to the moving truck company to secure a vehicle for your moving day. Make sure that the truck is the right size and can hold all your items comfortably. Remember that a truck that is not big enough to fit your household items could cost you more time as you may have to drive to and from your new home and then back again to pick up the extra items.

Similarly if the truck is too big then the empty spaces can cause your items to sway this way and that which could eventually cause damage. Perhaps you can ask the moving company to recommend a truck size that would hold all your items comfortably. You can also pay a small fee to have someone from the moving company come to your home and evaluate your items to determine the size of the truck you should get. When you have the truck in your possession, give it a test drive in a wide open space so that you can get familiar with everything from the controls, to even adjusting the seat and mirrors to further help you on moving day.

Once you have all the aforementioned sorted out and moving day arrives, here are a few things you may want to look out for when driving to your new home. Firstly, unlike your personal vehicle, you would have to take wider turns when you drive the truck. Also you may have chosen a pretty high truck and because of this you may need to take an alternate route especially if the truck is too tall to get on the underpass, bridges and drive-thru places to name a few.

Professional moving truck drivers would also advise that you pull your brakes early as you approach a stop light and do not back up the vehicle unless you have someone with you who can get out of the vehicle and guide you. Most of all find out if you can get insurance coverage for the truck just in case there are any vehicular damages along the way. Even if your insurance company does not cover it, it would be wise if you were to find an insurance company that does.
