How to Move Glass

What is one of the most challenging items to relocate from one home to another? Did anyone think glass? Glass, no matter if it is big or small is a fragile item that some would rather not tamper with come moving day. Fragility aside, depending on the size of the item, glass can also be very heavy as well.

One is always looking for ways in which they can move such an item without it breaking and falling to the ground, shattering in pieces. If you are relocating a glass item like say glass art, mirrors, shower doors, table or picture in a do-it-yourself project it should be done with great precision in order for it to get safely to its destination. One of the first rules of thumb when moving glass items is to try to never lay the glass down. Instead glass should be transported in an upright position pretty much the same way that you do if you were transporting plywood.

For moving the heavier glass, two persons are needed for the job and rubber gloves are recommended, especially the ones with the rubber in the palm. With the use of a suction cup you would be able to steady the glass as you get it to the moving truck. Depending on your pathway from where the glass is to the moving vehicle you may also be able to use a glass dolly. When it comes to loading the glass on the truck you should it should be in a vertical position against the truck’s side.

The glass should be separated with cardboard sheets so that they would not crack or break in transit. If you do not have cardboard sheets another alternative would be to lay the glass between two mattresses which you should carefully remove when you get to the new destination. For the smaller glass type items such as pictures they can be easily wrapped and protect in bubble wrap or in blankets. Picture cartons can also be used to store your pictures. Of course if you do not have the confidence to move the glass, then it’s best that you leave the job to the moving experts by hiring a moving company who are equipped with a team of skilful persons trained to get the job done.

Getting to know your moving companies

If this is your first time moving, perhaps from out of your parents’ home for instance, then you would soon be spending your time house hunting which would be followed by trying to get moving transportation to get there. One of the first things that you should know is that no two moving companies are the same. There are different types of moving companies that offer different types of moving services. By knowing what type of companies there are out there it would put you in a better position to choose the right one that suits your budget and your needs.

There are three known ways that you can choose to move. They include full-service moving, self service moving and through do-it-yourself moving. If you decide to use a full-service moving company then you can relax and be assured that they will do everything for you during your moving day. Full-service moving companies would not only pack and load your items onto their truck but they would also unload it and place your furniture in your new rooms as well. Full-service movers are very popular; more so because they are licensed to offer you insurance should your items get lost or damaged. Compared to other moving companies, full-service is a bit more costly than the other moving companies but you definitely get your money’s worth. More importantly when you are using a full-service moving company you are paying for the convenience offered and the professional expertise that they would add to the moving experience. Be sure to ask a lot of questions up front when you visiting a full-service moving company so that there would not be any financial surprise for you when they arrive on moving day.

Another option for moving is using the self-service moving companies. This is a very cost-effective way to move and it gives you the opportunity to be more involved in your move. You get to do your own packing and loading and unloading when you get to the new home and all that’s left for the moving company to do is to transport your items from point A to B. This moving option is also very popular with those who move since another option for you within this service would be to rent a moving pod which is a container that you can take to your home and load the items yourself in your own time and at your own pace. Once the pod is loaded, the moving company would pick it up and transport it to your new home. Finally there are do-it-yourself moving companies which would rent you a truck so that you can not only pack and load it but the mover can also drive the vehicle to their new location as well. This option although inexpensive it can cost you a lot of money in the long run if some moving mistakes are made.

Since you are doing everything for yourself you may not have a direction as to what to pack and in what types of boxes. You may not know the road rules that apply to driving a moving truck either. Most of all if your items get damaged along the way due to packing your items in poorly structured boxes among other things, then you would have to get the items replaced since it is your fault and not that of the moving company. Ask a lot of questions from the moving company and confirm that they are licensed and legitimate to run such a business as well.

Not only are these items very fragile and costly, but they also come with a lot of plugs that if not organized it would be very hard to keep up with. Here are a few suggestions to help packing up your electronics go a little more smoothly.

You probably use your desktop computer on a regular basis for either completing work or school projects or as a way to budgeting bank account or even as a method of paying bills online. Such a necessity item should be handled gently so as to avoid damage. Unlike the laptop computer, the desktop computer has several parts that need to be detached before you move. One of the items that you have to move is the central processing unit or CPU as it is commonly called. This part of the computer which is also known as the computer’s “brain” is where you would find the disk drive and the mother board as well. It should be detached carefully from the monitor and placed in a box that is bolstered with thick Styrofoam so that the CPU can easily slide down in the box comfortably and not shift around when moving.

The same should be done when packing your monitor and to prevent further prevent damage and scratches to your monitor’s screen you can tape a square piece of cardboard over it. Keep all your cords individually wrapped and secured with twist ties and label them for easy assembling when you get to your new home. Depending on the type of printer that you have you should try to remove its ink cartridge or toner before you pack them into boxes. If you are not sure how to pack your specific printer, it would be wise to consult with its manual. The ink or toner should never be boxed and sent with the movers but rather held on your person and kept cool especially if you are moving in the summertime.

Next, when it comes to moving your large screen television it’s best that you leave the packaging up to the experts. You can arrange for a professional moving service to have the item custom-crated a day or two before your moving day. It may cost you a little extra to have a professional package your item but it is truly worth it in the end. In any event, the movers would be liable should the television arrive to your new home in a damaged condition so make sure that you have this and other items insured with the movers to prevent this from happening. Movers always advise that you leave the TV turned off for a few hours before you turn it on when you get to your new location as well.

Finally if the boxes for your other electronic items are still in good condition, then you should put the items back in their original boxes. Make sure to use excessive padding material that would protect your items. The boxes that you would be using to pack these fragile items should be strong and sturdy and they should also be sealed with the packing tape that the professionals use.

If you are aware of the day that you would like to move out of your current home, give yourself two weeks prior to that date for packing and labeling your boxes.
Here are a few suggestions to get packing with ease.

Packing your Bathrooms
Bathrooms are pretty light-weight to accumulate items from and pack away but still a significant amount of care of required to store them away. For bathroom packing you should always store your bathroom items in zipped top bags to avoid spillage and of course for an easy find when you get to the new home. Tightly secure all bottle nozzles and it would also be wise if you were to reinforce it with tape as well so that it would not open. As you work your way through the bathroom cabinets and medicine shelves, separate each member of the family’s items and placed them in a zipped top bag that has their name labeled on it. Use plastic bags for holding your bathroom tissue, bathroom detergent etc and secure the bags with twist tie to avoid children from tampering with it. Throw out the items that you do not need or that could be replaceable. Such items include old toothbrushes, bathroom mats and shower curtains.

Packing your home office
Moving your home office is a huge undertaking especially if you are moving such items as your desk, printer, fax machine, computers etc. Not to mention there are many printed materials that you may have stored either in a cabinet or your desk drawer. The first thing to do would be to get your paperwork out of the way. Visit an office supplies store and purchase a few accordion-styled file boxes which are not expensive at all. You can also store your files in small plastic containers which makes it easy when transporting. Store your pens, paperclips and other such items, even your power cords etc in zipped top bags and keep these items along with your paperwork in the trunk of your car. If you have a desktop computer, bubble wrap the monitor to protect its glass and you can store the computer’s tower in a secured box with Styrofoam corners which would help to hold it in place. Similarly if you have a laptop, unless you would be using it anytime soon, we suggest that you store it away in your laptop bag or perhaps a bag you may have in your home that may double as one.
