How to Move Glass

What is one of the most challenging items to relocate from one home to another? Did anyone think glass? Glass, no matter if it is big or small is a fragile item that some would rather not tamper with come moving day. Fragility aside, depending on the size of the item, glass can also be very heavy as well.

One is always looking for ways in which they can move such an item without it breaking and falling to the ground, shattering in pieces. If you are relocating a glass item like say glass art, mirrors, shower doors, table or picture in a do-it-yourself project it should be done with great precision in order for it to get safely to its destination. One of the first rules of thumb when moving glass items is to try to never lay the glass down. Instead glass should be transported in an upright position pretty much the same way that you do if you were transporting plywood.

For moving the heavier glass, two persons are needed for the job and rubber gloves are recommended, especially the ones with the rubber in the palm. With the use of a suction cup you would be able to steady the glass as you get it to the moving truck. Depending on your pathway from where the glass is to the moving vehicle you may also be able to use a glass dolly. When it comes to loading the glass on the truck you should it should be in a vertical position against the truck’s side.

The glass should be separated with cardboard sheets so that they would not crack or break in transit. If you do not have cardboard sheets another alternative would be to lay the glass between two mattresses which you should carefully remove when you get to the new destination. For the smaller glass type items such as pictures they can be easily wrapped and protect in bubble wrap or in blankets. Picture cartons can also be used to store your pictures. Of course if you do not have the confidence to move the glass, then it’s best that you leave the job to the moving experts by hiring a moving company who are equipped with a team of skilful persons trained to get the job done.

Moving can definitely be a strain on your pocket and also your body. There are probably some of you out there who are probably still recuperating from your recent do-it-yourself moving project which saw you lifting and moving just about everything with the help from friends. If you want to spend the first few weeks basking in your new home rather than in bed riddled with pain, here are a few reasonably priced products that you can invest in.

Shoulder Straps
One of the best investments that you would ever make when thinking about a do-it-yourself move is purchasing a shoulder strap. Shoulder straps are designed to take the load off your shoulder especially when you are moving large furniture in your home. Most shoulder straps double as a dolly and are able to move everything from a large screen television to a washing machine. They are inexpensive and can move items up and down the stairs which make things much easier on your body when moving. When using the shoulder straps for moving, you should first get some assistance from a friend or two in order to make this moving process go smoother. The friends who are willing to assist you should also have shoulder straps on moving day as well.

It’s quite simple to use a shoulder strap but your lifting method could be detrimental to your body if you are not doing it right. If you have to move a large item like say a dryer for instance the best way to do so is to place the item between you and your friend. Don’t worry too much about the weight of the dryer because the shoulder strap would take on most of the weight as it can take on close to 800 pounds. What the shoulder strap would do is to elevate the dryer so that it is never touching the floor when moving. This is a good thing since you don’t have to worry about it destroying your floor especially if you have tiles.

Hand Trucks
Hand trucks work exceptionally well when you have to relocate your furniture and appliances on moving day. Not only is it designed to save you time when moving but it also allows you to move these heavy items without putting your back out. Without a hand truck one can easily have lower back injuries even if they are only lifting a moving box. Most hand trucks are made from steel or aluminum or even durable pipe frames. You can fit close to 600lbs on a hand truck which is also on wheels.

Back Brace
Finally, you would also want to invest in a back brace to assist with your moving project. Back brace can really save you some money at the chiropractor after moving day as it reduces the discomfort on the lower back when lifting heavy items and it also tapers abdominal support panels. It’s easy to wear as there are adjustable clips that would allow you to slide in and out of it well and it also comes with elastic suspenders.

Moving safety for the single woman

Single females are definitely doing it all for themselves including moving! More females are opting to live alone and while their independence is admirable there is no ignoring the unsafe situations that can plague a woman when she decides to live and move alone. A recent report has cited that during and after a move a large percentage of women have been targeted for burglary among other things. But with proper planning and adhering to precautionary measures, women would be able to enjoy the peace and serenity of their home minus the unwanted interruptions. Long before you decide to move you should notify all your neighbors, friends and family about your intentions to do so. For those currently renting an apartment, you can also let your landlord know in advance that you plan to move and where you are going but make sure that he does not share your new address with anyone.

Until you are fully moved in, it would be wise for you to rent a mail box at the post office to collect mail or you can even have the mail redirected to your office. The next thing on your “to do” list would be to seek out a professional moving company and while this may sound easy, it is a tough job especially since the moving industry has a high rate of start-ups each year. It is always good to shop around for a good moving company and it would also help if you were to get references and recommendations from some of your friends and family who have recently moved. If you are still not sure about which moving company you should go with, then you can also check out the company’s profile on the Better Business Bureau’s website.

Take a day or two to just drive around your new home before moving so as to be able to embrace your immediate surroundings. Map out the distance your new home is from the supermarket, your favorite restaurant and places that you usually frequent. This would save you the trouble of doing too much driving around when you get to your new home.

When moving day arrives and you get to your new home, do not be too quick to make friends with your new neighbors. Even if they introduce themselves to you a few days after you are all moved in, you should never allude to the fact that you are living single. If your move is a do-it-yourself project, then you should have someone watching over your items in the truck as you go back and forth unloading it.

In the first few days after you have moved in, try working on unpacking, changing the locks on the door and stepping up security on all your windows and doors. You may want to consider installing a security alarm system in your home so as to put your mind at ease so that you are guaranteed a good night’s sleep every night. Also in order not to tempt a burglar with your household possessions, it is recommended that you keep your drapes closed from prying eyes.
There is no doubt that you may wish to install cable and telephone in your new home and most of the times when the jobs cannot get done from the outside, the service person representing these companies would be required to enter your home to complete their work.

If this is the case then make sure that you have someone at your home on the day that the service persons are scheduled to be at your home. The service person should never know that you live by yourself so each time they are expected to show, make sure you have a friend with you. Finally, as a woman you may also be trusting of other women and may be compelled to be a little bit more lenient if a strange woman were to come to your door asking for assistance than you would a man. Keep in mind that there are female burglars out there too and it would be in your best interest to avoid having contact with them no matter the situation.
