Summertime moving tips

Summertime is usually the month that most people choose to move home; the fact that the kids are on break from school and the weather is mostly sunny makes this time of year a particularly popular one. But even while summer conjures up brilliant sunshine in the nation, one also must not forget the rainfall that is also likely to show up as well.

True, the rain is a welcoming change especially when there have been days of record-breaking heat. And while those who work outside would welcome the rainfall to keep them cool, rain is indeed a mover’s nightmare that could very well impede progress during moving.

A little bit of rain would never cancel a move. However, if it is a thunderstorm type of scenario, then you are better off changing the moving date. For those who are unable to put off moving day because of legal landlord issues, then be prepared to put in that extra work to protect your furniture from the elements.

For your furniture, it is best that you use some heavy duty tarp to wrap or cover as well as plastic, the latter especially when covering mattresses and sofas. Avoid the use of shrink wrap as water can still seem into it.

Moving the furniture to and from the truck in the rainy weather can also be tricky. True, the top portion is covered and protected but what about the bottom part of the furniture that may have to touch the wet or muddy ground?  Moving experts would advise that you make a walkway out of either old carpets or rugs for which you can drag the items into the house. On moving day, ensure that you make the movers’ job as easy as possible. You can do this by using lots of sheets, towels, blankets, whatever you can find to lay in the house to prevent the movers from slipping. You want to lay them out smoothly so that the movers would not trip or fall. You simply cannot ask the moving crew to remove their shoes when they enter your home. That’s why it is important to either spread material on the floor or simply have a mop handy to clean up the mess.

New Year Moving Guide

What is the perfect way to ring in the New Year? By moving into a new home where you can get a fresh start on life. If you have intentions of moving in the first month of the New Year, it is best that you start planning now so as to avoid any interruptions along the way. Remember that moving is indeed a big project so it there are a lot of details you must pay attention to as you plan to relocate.

One of the first things that you would do is to locate a moving company. After you have chosen the company that fits your needs you should provide the company and its movers with all your contact numbers so that they are always able to contact you no matter where you are. Moving house can be very unpredictable; there are times when the company may be running late etc because of reasons beyond their control. This is the time that they would want to reach out to you.

Packing your items would be next on the agenda and this is the task that you should always try to do with great precision as you never want to leave anything behind. Experts would tell you that it is better to pack room by room. We also want to add that it would also be wise to package a special box that would contain all your immediate necessities that you would need when you move to your new home. By packing a box of necessities you would definitely be saving yourself the extra time you would spend fishing out something like let’s say your toothbrush, toilet paper or even light bulbs.

As you pack, remember that the movers are prohibited from taking certain items on the truck for moving. This would include everything from cleaning agents to flammables, ammunition and even aerosol cans. In addition, if you are moving machinery from your home such as lawnmower, you would need to empty out the fuel before the mower is loaded on the moving truck.

Proper attention and care must also be given to moving your favorite china and mirrors which are undoubtedly two fragile items. There are dish containers that are available for wrapping items such as your beloved china. However, if you do not have such an item then your best bet would be to place the china in newsprint (preferably white) which should then be inserted into a durable type barrel. You could save yourself some chinaware damage if you were to pack the heavier piece of china at the bottom of the barrel and then pack the lighter ones on top of it. Similarly, when it comes to moving mirrors or even pictures, make sure that you have them well padded and wrapped and placed in a suitable storage.

Finally, you may have some valuable documents or items laying around the home for moving. Your best bet would be to package them and keep them with you in your vehicle for moving. These items usually include jewelry, alcoholic beverages and even important documents. Therefore you should never entrust it to the movers since most of them are not responsible for repaying or replacing your items.

Keeping the festive holiday mood during move

There is truly no place like home for the holidays. And things can become even more complicated when you have to relocate to a new home in the height of the festive season. Relocating during the holidays can truly leave a person with torn emotions because on one hand you are happy to have closed and move in to your spanking new home. On the other hand there is a sentimental tie to the old home where many Christmases have been spent with friends and family.

In addition to that moving has proven to take its toll on a lot of people so one can only imagine the type of additional stress it could cause during the holiday season. Although holiday moving can be bittersweet it’s always best if one were to focus on the happier aspects of moving around this time of year.. For those who are set to move a week before Christmas, you should have all your items packed and labeled some two weeks in advance. This is to ensure that when the week before Christmas rolls around you would be literally living out of your luggage as you await the movers to pick up your household items.

The last week spent at your old home should be spent doing something fun and festive as you may not have the time to put together a traditional holiday celebration when you settle in to your new home. Days before moving spend some time with your family as you indulge in some holiday activities. There is always something festive going on this time of year and quite a few cities host tree lighting events that people look forward to each year. All over your state there are Christmas concerts. Holiday fairs and stage plays that you can also attend.

You can even enjoy a pre-Christmas dinner at your favorite restaurant and perhaps include a few friends and extended family to go along with you to make it even more memorable. Events such as these would definitely put you and your family in a festive mood and one that would lift your spirits and take your focus off the stress of moving. You can still plan on your traditional gift-giving for the holiday but moving experts advise that you purchase your gifts online and have them gift wrapped and shipped to those on your gift list rather than having the gifts sent to your home.

Not only are you eliminating the time that it would take to box and wrap the gift for your friends and family but it also saves you from moving into your new home with the extra loads of gift boxes. As you get into your new home remember that the most important thing for you and your family is to make sure that every household item is accounted for, relocated to the designated rooms and that there is still some time left over for you to rest and relax and enjoy your new home.

If you are to do any last minute Christmas decorating then you should try to keep it as simple as possible. You can choose to decorate the areas of your home that would be most frequented by guests. These may include the living room, the kitchen, foyer etc. A pre-decorated Christmas tree may save you time and would be the perfect companion to holiday wreaths on the walls and garlands on the stair-rail or on the fireplace mantel. Holiday-themed curtains and matching tablecloths with poinsettias on the window sill can truly transform a kitchen into a place that would be sure to get thumbs up from Santa.
