How to move an armoire

Armoires are attractive in the home but can definitely be a bit challenging to move. With that said it is really better to leave this type of moving jobs to the experts. However, if you are determined to turn this into a do-it-yourself moving project, then read on. To move a large furniture or an armoire you would need lots of padding and tape which would keep your armoire intact by the time you get to the other location.

The first thing that you need to do is to remove all the shelves from the armoire. These shelves are to be bundled within the padding or a blanket and then wrapped tightly with tape. As you wrap the shelves try to keep the adhesive part of the tape from getting on the shelves as much as possible. If the tape accidentally gets on the shelves, it would be difficult to remove so make sure when you are using the tape that it is only applied to the blanket or pad. Once the shelves are wrapped you should take them to the truck where they would sit separate from the other parts of the armoire.

Depending on the type of armoire that you own you may have a few removable parts on it which may include doors. If this is the case then they should also be wrapped in a blanket or padding. Even if you leave the doors on remember to protect the handles and the knobs. Now you are ready to wrap the armoire with excessive padding from its top to the bottom, front and back and the sides also.  The padding should be reinforced with an excessive amount of tape which would also be wrapped tightly.

Even if you have a large armoire and the padding is not providing coverage to the back of the armoire then make sure that you at least cover half the top and bottom as those parts of the armoire can easily be scratched which ultimately can look unsightly.  If your armoire has a glass door then you can protect it with heavy duty cardboard after it has been padded just to further reinforce it. Now that your armoire is packed securely then you are ready to take it to the truck. Think about getting a shoulder dolly as it would help make your job a lot easier in carrying the armoire from your home to the truck and then to the new house. It would also save you from having back problems due to lifting long after you have moved in.

How to Move Glass

What is one of the most challenging items to relocate from one home to another? Did anyone think glass? Glass, no matter if it is big or small is a fragile item that some would rather not tamper with come moving day. Fragility aside, depending on the size of the item, glass can also be very heavy as well.

One is always looking for ways in which they can move such an item without it breaking and falling to the ground, shattering in pieces. If you are relocating a glass item like say glass art, mirrors, shower doors, table or picture in a do-it-yourself project it should be done with great precision in order for it to get safely to its destination. One of the first rules of thumb when moving glass items is to try to never lay the glass down. Instead glass should be transported in an upright position pretty much the same way that you do if you were transporting plywood.

For moving the heavier glass, two persons are needed for the job and rubber gloves are recommended, especially the ones with the rubber in the palm. With the use of a suction cup you would be able to steady the glass as you get it to the moving truck. Depending on your pathway from where the glass is to the moving vehicle you may also be able to use a glass dolly. When it comes to loading the glass on the truck you should it should be in a vertical position against the truck’s side.

The glass should be separated with cardboard sheets so that they would not crack or break in transit. If you do not have cardboard sheets another alternative would be to lay the glass between two mattresses which you should carefully remove when you get to the new destination. For the smaller glass type items such as pictures they can be easily wrapped and protect in bubble wrap or in blankets. Picture cartons can also be used to store your pictures. Of course if you do not have the confidence to move the glass, then it’s best that you leave the job to the moving experts by hiring a moving company who are equipped with a team of skilful persons trained to get the job done.

Cheap moving rental trucks may be more expensive than you know

If you are planning a do-it-yourself move, then more than likely you would have to start looking into renting a moving truck to do so. Since renting a moving truck is a very important part of the moving experience selecting the right truck moving company is a process that should be done with great precision. With so many truck rental companies vying for your attention, just how do you know that you are making the right choice when making your selection?

If you are on a tight budget you may be tempted to go for a rental truck company that offers the lowest price. But don’t be fooled since there are some companies that would give you a low price with stipulations that you would only find out about long after you have paid your money for the vehicle. So while you may be charged an affordable daily rate for the vehicle, some people have had situations where the rental truck company dictated the days that they would be able to use the vehicle. Most of these days that they choose are during the week and this could be a big problem especially for those who do not have flexible work schedules. It would be in your best interest to take some time and read the fine print to see what you are getting yourself into.

Also, when selecting your rental truck find out if the price quoted includes amenities as well. Is the truck air-conditioned? Is it an automatic or gear shift vehicle? What about the brakes and steering; are they powered? These are just some of the questions that you can ask the truck rental company before making a deal.

You must also know that there are some truck rental companies that would provide you with coverage on the roads just in case you get in an accident while moving while others would even cover the cost should the vehicle experience mechanical problems or should it shut down. Read and re-read your truck rental contract to see if coverage is included and if there are a few things on the control that you do not understand then you should ask the truck company to clarify. Road coverage is an integral part of truck rental moving so if you encounter a company that does not offer coverage then you would be better off shopping around for one that does.

Avoid these moving scams

Depending on the type of moving company that you choose, you could be signing your way into a scam and not even know it. That is why at this forum we often reiterate about you doing your homework long before you settle on a moving company to handle your relocation project. Scammers are popping up everywhere even in the moving company business and they are luring those of you who want to be able to move at a cheaper price. Most of these moving companies are new kids on the block and you would be lucky if you find any one of them that are licensed and certified to do business or even with a member of the American Moving and Storage Association.

Scam movers are devising many ways in which to scam you out of your money when you move and one of the more popular ways is by inflating the estimate prices and quotations. One should beware of those moving representatives who come over to your home to give you an estimate and a low quote which mysteriously gets higher when moving day arrives. The best way you can counteract this is by double checking the representative’s estimate sheet to make sure that he has not left out anything. Most consumers have had experiences with moving representatives who have deliberately left out a room or two on their estimates only to add them in to the cost on moving day.  On the other hand there are some moving companies who love to give you estimates over the phone without seeing your household items. These moving companies work blindly as they get you to be their eyes at your home in order to evaluate what you have. This is another bad way to do business since what is quoted on the phone can suddenly become higher on moving day. Ensure that the movers send their representatives out to your home to estimate the items before you move.

There are also some moving companies that would further reinforce your boxes and possessions with their own packaging which you may assume is a free job since you never asked for it. But do not be surprised if the few extra boxes and tape that you have received from your moving representative comes up on your moving invoice. You would be better off if you keep extra boxes and packaging around, even tape to avoid this situation.

Also more and more brokers are posing as moving companies and they are pulling the old “bait and switch” on unsuspecting consumers. You may call in to what you may think is a moving company and make arrangements for that company’s movers to come out to relocate you on moving day. By the time moving day arrives you realize that your moving job has been passed on to another group of movers. Ensure that the company that you choose is not a moving broker company and ask them to meet the movers that they would be sending out to your home on moving day.

Saving for your move

There is no easy way to say it but moving is indeed an expensive project that we all must undertake at some point in our lives. There are some of us who can afford it and there are those who cannot. For those who cannot afford it they may be tempted to max out their credit card in order to pay off their bills. But just think how much more debt you would be putting yourself in if you had to add that convenient credit card expense to the rest of your already grim financial picture.

You can avoid extra expenses for your move if you are able to save money towards it. If you are planning to rent a home, your moving costs may include getting the first and last month’s rent plus you may also want to replace some old furniture in your current home a well. If you have a projected month that you wish to move, then it would be a good thing to start saving your money some nine months in advance. In the months leading up to your move try to put aside at least 50 dollars to 100 dollars a month in a bank account that you rarely use. Even if you don’t have an account to spare, you should think about opening up a new account just for moving expenses. Ask the bank teller about opening an account that would reward you with a high interest rate. If you think you may be tempted to touch the money that you have set aside for the moving company then ask the bank teller about getting an account that would prevent you from withdrawing your money too early.

While you are building your savings, try not to spend unnecessary money elsewhere. For instance, you may have a sofa that you’ve owned for over 10 years and you may be thinking about purchasing a new set. If wear and tear is the only problem that you have with the sofa then you should hold off on the new purchase and opt for either reupholstering or purchasing a few slipcovers for the sofa instead.

And if the furniture is uncomfortable to sit on and you must get a replacement, then shop at a few garage sales in your neighborhood where you are always guaranteed to get a good deal. There are a few furniture stores out there that even have great prices on their items as well but you really need to shop around so that you can lock in to a price that would suit your pocket. As you save for your moving expenses, you and your family would also have to cut back on a lot of things including taking family vacations, eating out etc. Remember that your situation would not last forever and it’s worth it if you can move into a new home after you have paid your moving company in cash. Just think how fulfilling would feel to be able to move into your new home without having a large bill looming over your head to repay.
