What you need to know about renting a moving truck

These days a person would do just about anything to cut cost in this tough economy. Even when it comes to moving your home, you may either want to lock in on the lowest prices to do so or you may opt to get the job done yourself. One of the ways in which you can cut back on moving costs is by renting and then driving the moving truck to your new destination.

No matter how much of a seasoned driver you are with your own vehicle, you could really never anticipate what it is like to drive a moving truck. The minute you find out that you would be moving, you should get your call in to the moving truck company to secure a vehicle for your moving day. Make sure that the truck is the right size and can hold all your items comfortably. Remember that a truck that is not big enough to fit your household items could cost you more time as you may have to drive to and from your new home and then back again to pick up the extra items.

Similarly if the truck is too big then the empty spaces can cause your items to sway this way and that which could eventually cause damage. Perhaps you can ask the moving company to recommend a truck size that would hold all your items comfortably. You can also pay a small fee to have someone from the moving company come to your home and evaluate your items to determine the size of the truck you should get. When you have the truck in your possession, give it a test drive in a wide open space so that you can get familiar with everything from the controls, to even adjusting the seat and mirrors to further help you on moving day.

Once you have all the aforementioned sorted out and moving day arrives, here are a few things you may want to look out for when driving to your new home. Firstly, unlike your personal vehicle, you would have to take wider turns when you drive the truck. Also you may have chosen a pretty high truck and because of this you may need to take an alternate route especially if the truck is too tall to get on the underpass, bridges and drive-thru places to name a few.

Professional moving truck drivers would also advise that you pull your brakes early as you approach a stop light and do not back up the vehicle unless you have someone with you who can get out of the vehicle and guide you. Most of all find out if you can get insurance coverage for the truck just in case there are any vehicular damages along the way. Even if your insurance company does not cover it, it would be wise if you were to find an insurance company that does.

The Power of the Moving Pods

What is the easiest way to get moving to your new location without too much stress in a do-it-yourself moving project? By using a pod, of course. Pods are moving containers that were invented back in the late 1980s to help make moving a lot easier for most. For the moving party that is strapped for cash, a pod container could also help to save you a lot of money as well.

After you rent a pod from a moving company, you are able to take the pod away to your home where you would start packing to relocate. The nice part about renting a pod is that if you have no intentions of moving within the next few days, the pod allows you to start packing your items little by little and at your own pace until it is completed.

There are no professional movers involved at this stage so right away you are eliminating moving labor costs. You can pretty much get a few friends and family together, have some good food waiting for them as they help you pack and store your items in the pod. The pods are place at ground level so it makes it very easy for you to load and unload items into them without straining yourself.

When you are packing and storing your items in the pod to move you have jurisdiction over where the boxes should go or which corner of the square shaped pod they should be stacked as well as the order of priority. Let’s say that you want to get your box with house cleaning essentials out of the truck first when you arrive, you would be able to stock it close to the pod’s entrance for easy access.

Because of the size of the pods, you can tightly pack a lot of items in your pod and be rest assured that they would be safe and secure. Unlike other moving vehicles, it is rare that your items would get shift around when they are in the pods. In addition when the pods are being transported to your new location by the movers they are placed on a hydraulic lift and loaded on to the truck. The lift also eliminates shifting of your items to occur.

Pod containers are built to handle most weather conditions such as heat and water. This means that no matter the weather, you would still be able to move to your new home knowing that your items would be secured. The materials used in building a pod container also makes it durable enough to withstand rough treatment as well.

Put safety first when you move

If you have just moved in to your new dream home then we say congratulations to you. There is nothing more than meaningful than settling in at a new location especially since this is a New Year and new decade. But when the movers have gone and all your items have been placed safely inside your home, it would be time to start concentrating on properly securing your home for yourself and your family. Burglary and fire hazards are two of the foremost circumstances that could happen to a home if it isn’t well protected.

Statistics have shown that fire comes in second when it comes to unintentional death in the home. Burglary is also another crime that is plaguing so many states these days that it even eclipses the murder rate. There are a few simple and inexpensive measures that you can take that would prevent the aforementioned circumstances from occurring in your home and affecting those that you love.

Smoke alarms are highly recommended for the home but what good would it be if it isn’t working properly. Therefore you need to change the batteries as often as you can to ensure that the alarm sounds off at the appropriate time. Even if you have batteries in you should always try to check your smoke alarm as often as each month. Maybe quite as popular as smoke alarms, carbon monoxide detectors are also highly important and becoming a necessity in the home. Research has proven that close to 200 Americans die from the effects caused by carbon monoxide poisoning. There are many things in your home that can contribute to carbon monoxide. These include water and room heaters and even your furnace among other things. Headaches, feeling fatigued, nausea and dizziness are all the symptoms that you have to look out for as they can indicate carbon monoxide poisoning.

As we said earlier, burglary is one of the top crimes these days and even more so that the economy has taken a nose dive. You can do your part by keeping the burglar at bay by ensuring that your windows and doors and well secured. If your home features flimsy locks on the doors and windows, it would be wise to head out to a department store and purchase locks that would reinforce what you already have. Burglars tend to gravitate to a home that is shrubbery or one that has a lot of trees to hide out in, so remember to always cut them low and keep them that way.

In addition, the amount of outdoor lights that you have around your house can also deter the burglar from attempting to rob your home. Finally you should think about installing a security alarm system. True you may be reluctant to spend extra money that you may have to getting a security system soon after spending a lot of money to move, but you just really can’t put a price on your safety for you and your family. Having a security alarm system would definitely be worth it in the long run.
