The Pros and Cons of Moving With Your Vehicle

How to move long distance with your car

Probably one of the biggest obstacles that could come your way when making a long distance move is having to relocate with one or more cars. Moving your car to your new location can be so costly it is no wonder that people who move end up either selling or donating their vehicles locally. If you do not want to part ways with your vehicle, you may be tempted to drive your own car across the states. But even that option can be a tricky one in that depending on the distance you can rack up a pretty high price at the pump and tolling stations. In addition the durability of your vehicle and its age could either work for you or against you.

There are many steps that you have to take should you decide to move with your car. One of the first things that you have to do is to make sure that your car passes the emissions and safety standard tests. Since these tests are different in every state that you go, it would be wise to call up your Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV) and get more information as it pertains to the cost factor of the tests and other requirements to make your move possible.

Next, you would also need to adjust your insurance since moving to a new state can either inflate or deflate your insurance costs. Once you get the insurance and safety standard tests out of the way, then you are ready to choose your moving options. One of the ways in which you can move your car is by employing the services of an auto mover. If this is your method of choice you should take comfort in the fact that your vehicle would be loaded on a flatbed or enclosed truck and be transported to your new location. Of course comfort comes with a price and using an auto mover is an expensive addition to your already large moving bill. This is because distance, the operating condition of your car, its size and weight and make and model among other things are taking into consideration before you are given a price. Then too we have not even included the price that you would have to pay the hauler and the insurance that they provide as well.

Expert auto movers would tell you that the cost of moving a vehicle can be anything around $1100 or more. One way in which you can cut the cost is by using your own auto insurance as opposed to that of the halter. You can also abort the idea of using an auto mover and opt for a terminal-to-terminal type of service where your car would be transferred to your new town without the extra cost. Your best bet would be to call a terminal employee who would be better to assist you with information on this.

Need a tax write-off? Try moving expenses

With the state of the economy being what it is today, more people are relocating out of state in search of job openings. And compared to a local move, out of state moves can be tedious and not to mention very costly. If you are searching for ways in which to save money when  you move for a job then the Internal Revenue Service (IRS) has the answers for you.

Your relocating fees due to moving for a job can now be submitted to IRS to be written off as a moving expense on your taxes. Before you get all giddy with glee thinking about the money you would be saving, you should first know that there are certain steps you have to take in order to make this happen. Relocating to take up a job out of state is one of the first qualifying factors for this tax write-off. You are also expected to start the job within a year from when you move as well. The job should be full-time and you must hold a position for a steady 39 weeks in your first year. If you can stay with the same employer for the duration of the 39 weeks then that would be a plus for you in terms of stability and longevity. However you are not required to stay with one employer.

Finally it would help if you keep a good paper trail of all your receipts that are connected with your move. These receipts would include your travel expenses, storage fees expenses, and the money you pay for your insurance as well as utility expenses to name a few. Even if you stayed at a hotel prior to getting an apartment, then you should also include that receipt as well.

The receipts that you submit are not limited to the moving services provided by a professional mover rather you can also submit the receipts that you accumulated from a do-it-yourself move. Of course these are just basic information on moving and your taxes. A representative from IRS or even a tax service provider would be able to provide you with more information about this.

Why moving insurance is necessary

When one thinks about moving the first thing that comes to mind is the countless hours that they have to spend on packaging and labeling boxes. And while this is an integral part in relocating, having moving insurance is even more important and vital. With moving insurance you are almost guaranteed that the furniture and other household items that you have spent thousand of dollars to own and enjoy are well protected from the minute it leaves your old location to the new one. Not only does the moving insurance coverage assist with damaged property but it can also help you should your items get lost.

Now you may be thinking “which moving insurance would be right for me?” Well it depends on the size and value of your property and of course how much you want to spend on having it insured. It also depends on where you are going to move whether it is within your city or out of state.  There are two types of coverage which are mandated by federal regulations for moving companies especially those who deal with out of state moves. The released value protection plan for instance reimburses customers at 60 cents per pound for everything that they own.

In addition some moving companies would also tag on a full-value protection which gives customers a percentage of what they think the bulk of items are worth. So let’s say that you are moving to Boston, Massachusetts  from New Jersey and you estimate the value of your all your items to be around say $35,000. Then the moving company would have you pay 1 percent of the value which in this case would be around $350. When you pay this amount for full-value protection of your items then the moving company would figure out how you should be compensation should your items be destroyed, damaged or lost. In the case of items that are damaged, the moving company can offer to have it repaired. Similarly if the item is lost then it would be replaced with a product that looks similar although it may not be equal in price.

Of course there are other types of moving insurance that may require that you pay on items more than $100 per pound for all the items that you list on your moving documents; another that would have you decide the value of your items by a per-pound amount.

No matter what you choose, make sure that you are absolutely clear on which insurance coverage you are getting into before you sign off on it. Bear in mind that moving companies are not moving insurance representatives so they would not be able to give you as much information that you may require on choosing the right coverage. However you can ask the moving company to refer you to an insurance representative who can give you all the necessary information that you need. The insurance representative would be able to tell you more about what types of packages are covered and what a natural disaster would mean for your move and your items.

Making the military move easier

We salute the men and women of the military for and their spouses their unwavering dedication to fighting for our freedom.

The life of a full-time military person involves extensive moving either within the country or far away in another country. Usually when the military person moves, he is allowed to take along his spouse as well as children. Since relocation is often frequent, it is quite easy to lose important documents. Even worst, the transition can be severely stressful especially if kids are involved. A successful military move begins with planning and preparation a month in advance.

The military would send movers to your home to get the larger items but you are still responsible for securing your other items such as jewelry, money and even the serviceman’s gun. Within the month before you move, you should separate the items that you want to take with you and the others that you would prefer to leave behind. Get rid of the items that you do not want by either selling it on an auction website or by hosting a local yard sale or you can even donate it to charity.

A military home is filled with paperwork which includes orders, certificates and medical records in addition to personal documents like birth and marriage certificates and grade school reports for the kids among other things. Gather all the paperwork and place them in a folder where the documents are well protected with plastic. Your social security cards, children’s medical information and car insurance documents should also be placed in this folder. It would be wise to purchase labeling tags so as to stick on the plastic to help you better locate your paperwork when you need them.

Documents aside there can also be an abundance of photos as well. For this you can invest in one of the many photo carriers that are out there or you can place them in a photo album to later stack in boxes. Plastic container sell for very cheap at the dollar stores are also ideal for storing your photos.

You will receive an inventory form to sign when you receive your orders. Remember to list everything that you have in your home by brand name and quantity so that if your items were to get lost or damaged, it would be replaced with the money for the identical product. Properly pad, seal and label your boxes and also list them on the form as well. Do not sign the form until you are satisfied that you have listed everything that you are taking with you.

When it comes to the children, accentuate the positive sides of moving to your children so that they would not be too stressed over it. However, if your child is still despondent after your talk, then you can ask the military’s family program representatives to provide you with more information on how you can assist your child. The family program is very resourceful and may have a professional that they can send out to your home to talk to your child. Finally make sure that all your utility bills and phone bills are paid off or transferred if you are relocating within the state. And do not forget to have your mail forwarded to your new address as well.

Are you choosing the right sized rental truck?

When it comes to renting a moving truck, size does matter. It’s quite easy to want to make your relocation from one house to another as a do-it-yourself moving project but you could wind up having difficulties if the truck you have rented does not quite measure up. One of the reasons you may choose to rent a moving truck as oppose to having a local moving company move you to your new home is that you want to save money. Another perk that comes with renting a moving truck in the extra hours packing and loading your items as well. All your money-saving efforts for moving could go down the drain if the moving truck that you rent is not the right size. You want to select a moving truck that is big enough to hold all your household items so that you can transport them all with just one trip.

Choosing the wrong truck size would result in making far more trips to and from your new destination which would ultimately cost you more than you bargain for in gas and other expenses. Therefore we advise that you never assume the size of all your household items to match with a particular tray size. You want a truck that would fit all your items comfortably. At the same time you do not want to guesstimate and select a large truck for your few items only to have extra floor room space that would send your items rolling all over the tray either. So what can you do to ensure an accurate measurement for your moving truck?

We’re sure that most of you have used or have heard about a mortgage calculator. Well there is actually a moving calculator that would tally up weight and volume and let you know the size of the truck that you should rent. Most of these calculators are available online and it allows you to list everything from your fridge to your stove to magazine rack and curtains for evaluation. At the end of putting in your entry you are then given the size of truck and tray that you should rent.

Of course you can also feel free to ask a mover to assist you in finding the right size truck so you can move. See if the truck rental company is affiliated with any moving company and then find out if they can visit your home and evaluate your items.
